What is Ayurveda? 101

Ayurveda: The Science of Life

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of medicine whose name comes from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda(wisdom or science). At its core, Ayurveda is a guide to living in balance: physically, mentally, and spiritually. While rooted in ancient traditions, it offers timeless principles that modern science is only beginning to explore and appreciate. Ayurveda is widely believed to be the oldest continuously practiced form of medicine in the world.

Why Does Ayurveda Matter?

Ayurveda isn’t just about treating illness—it’s about nurturing the whole being. It addresses the development of the soul and the health of the body and mind. Because of this holistic approach, Ayurveda is closely linked with yoga. The two are often called “sister sciences,” working hand-in-hand to support well-being.

In relation to your yoga or meditation practice, Ayurveda teaches that even the type of practice you choose should reflect your individual condition—your health, age, energy, and lifestyle at any given moment. Since we change from day to day, moment to moment, cultivating awareness through Ayurveda can help you make choices that truly serve your well-being.

Where to Begin?

The journey starts with understanding the five elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth.

These elements are the foundation of Ayurvedic theory and give rise to the three doshas (body-mind types). Learning how these elements exist within you—and how they shift—opens the door to deeper self-awareness, balance, and vitality.
